NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter marks a milestone. Space.com reports that Ingenuity passed one mile for the total distance it flew on Flight 10 on July 24 when it traveled through Jezero Crater's "Raised Ridges" area.
It doesn't look like much to fly, but สล็à¸à¸• NASA is planning a few test flights for Ingenuity before expanding the vehicle's role — the robotic plane won't cover nearly as much area as the others.
This is the most ambitious flight to date. The helicopter had to swing past 10 different reference points and flew to a record altitude of 40 feet during its 310-foot voyage.
It also had to capture enough images to help NASA produce three-dimensional images of the Raised Ridges and Help inform potential visits from the Perseverance rover.
It is not yet clear how many miles Ingenuity will be able to accumulate. The helicopter is the first of its kind. and is likely to push the limits on each new flight.
