The ’White van drivers’ are facing a bleak future. The only question being how quickly their livelihood will disappear when robotic self driving vehicles take over.

Thirty years ago when I saw a 25 year old with a two or three fillings I would say -

“How have you managed to keep your teeth so remarkably healthy?”

These days The same two or three fillings are more likely to get -

“How did you let this happen?”

The sort of thing that will shape dentistry going forward:

  • “Remineralisation guided by peptides is a healthy alternative to current dental health care.”The peptide derived from the amelogenin protein attaches to the teeth, “biomineralises”, and promotes the growth of minerals found in tooth enamel. One treatment can spur the growth of 10 to 50 micrometers of new enamel.                journal ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering.

  • Taking a probiotic pill containing a form of Streptococcus will change the bacterial milieu to protect against caries

Fewer children in the U.S. are actually getting cavities. In 2016  43 percent of people aged 2 to 19 have had a cavity — a drop from the 50 percent of people who said the same in 2012.       Study by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That is a drop of almost 2% per year - two decades from now caries could well be a rare phenomenon …

For the young dentists out there, and those entering the profession think very carefully on securing your future and that of your families…
